Summer Plum Verbascum

Julie Devine

Deep plum blooms on grey-green stems, the scale large enough that the flowers become almost architectural. Devine uses the verbascum as a formal problem: how to hold colour and form in balance when the subject refuses to sit still. The knifework that anchors her landscape paintings appears here in the stems — structure disguised as touch. Oil on canvas, 36 × 36 inches.
