Autumn Trees
I sketched this place in the thick of autumn, when color comes on so boldly it almost argues with you — that orange-red maple refusing to be quiet, the chartreuse beside it, the deep burgundy pressing in from the right. Back in the studio, I worked the paint into the canvas with gesture and stroke until the yard found its own voice, the evergreens holding everything in place while the color does what it wants.
