Sandpipers
Sandpipers at the waterline — three birds at work in the zone where the wave has just receded, their plumage rendered in ochre, cream, and warm grey with the precision of an illustrator who has looked a long time. The shallow foreground gives way to a pale horizon that refuses depth; the birds are not scenic. They are named. Freda has spent fifteen years on endangered species; even when the birds in a work are not technically at risk, the act of rendering them this carefully is the same act. Watercolor, graphite, and gold leaf on archival paper.
